Trademark BLACK FRIDAY will be registered in Russia. The Federal Service for Intellectual Property of the Russian Federation (Rospatent) has made such decision. The company "BlackFriday" which owns the site-aggregator of discounts (BlackFridaySALE.ru) will be the rightholder.
Earlier Rospatent refused to register the trademark "Black Friday" due to the fact that “Black Friday” is a common term, signifying the beginning of a global sell-off in late November each year. Only after considering the objections authority has decided that the traditional US sale is little known in Russia, namely "Black Fraydey" was the first company which held a large-scale sell-off in 2013. The trademark will be registered in respect of information and marketing services, and, according to lawyers, stores will be able to continue to use promotions phrase BLACK FRIDAY. However other sites have to find another name.
