The European Union refused to registration of Microsoft's trademark Skype

The European Union refused to registration of Microsoft's trademark Skype EU Court sided with British Sky Broadcasting Group in a lawsuit with Microsoft over trademark registration of Skype and logo in the form of clouds. Microsoft is trying to register a brand Skype on the European market for many years.

The British company Sky is against the decision, the company asserts that the name of the popular IP-telephony service in tune with its TM Sky.

Moreover the Skype logo contains the image of cloud, while the Sky name translates to English as "sky, heaven". The British company specially conducted surveys in Europe and came to the conclusion that consumers often perceive these two brands as one brand.

The court took into account these arguments and rejected Microsoft's trademark registration Skype.
Microsoft lawyers are going to appeal the court's decision.
